"Online Chess" - an excellent homemade project

2010-07-14 0 comments

The Internet Chess Table is a project for playing internet chess on a 3d board with real pieces.

For the display, a small DIY 20W-LED low-resolution (64x64px) LCD projector was developed. It is used for displaying the move of my opponent as well as to show me information about the game (e.g. time). Moreover, there is a move recognition system which gives me feedback of the recognized move on the display.

Move recognition works with an ultra cheap webcam (320x240px) which is also mounted inside the box.

Basically, this table could be interpretated as multi-touch surface. In the contrary to other systems which uses FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) or DI (direct illumination), it depends on ambient light and the pieces are causing shadows on the surface which can be captured by the webcam. This further reduces the total costs, because no lightning is needed.

Display and Webcam are connected to the PC via USB and a self developed interface software is used for connecting everything together and for communication with freechess.org.

The video shows me playing a live 5min game on FICS ...

Unfortunately, Playing live blitz games on this Internet chess table gives me a disadvantage, because I have to play the moves of my opponent while my clock is ticking. That means, I have time disadvantage which could be severe in fast blitz games.

This Internet Chess Table playes on freechess.org with the nickname ictdev.

The competition between Samsung Galaxy S and Google Nexus One ( video)

Quake3 demo (Google: Kwaak3) running on my Android powered Samsung Galaxy S (GT-i9000). Can't display actual frame rate due to lack of hardware buttons so can't access the in-game console. I also don't have a Bluetooth keyboard and this video is just for a bit of fun. Phone had about ~85Mb free RAM at the time of playing.

Draft Mouseless: mouse without a mouse

2010-07-07 0 comments
Mouseless - an invisible computer mouse

Mouseless is an invisible computer mouse. It provides the familiarity of interaction of a physical mouse without actually needing a real hardware mouse.

As the computer mouse has remained largely unchanged over the last decades, we have become increasingly proficient at operating the two-button mouse. Recently, various multitouch and gestural interaction technologies have been explored as means to implement alternative methods to interact with a computer. Despite these advances in computing hardware technologies, the two-button computer mouse has remained the predominant means to interact with a computer. The Mouseless invention removes the requirement of having a physical mouse altogether but still provides the intuitive interaction of a physical mouse that we are familiar with.

Mouseless consists of an Infrared (IR) laser beam and an Infrared camera. Both IR laser and IR camera are embedded in the computer. The laser beam module is modified with a line cap and placed such that it creates a plane of IR laser just above the surface the computer sits on. The user cups their hand, as if a physical mouse was present underneath, and the laser beam lights up the hand which is in contact with the surface. The IR camera detects those bright IR blobs using computer vision. The change in the position and arrangements of these blobs are interpreted as mouse cursor movement and mouse clicks. As the user moves their hand the cursor on screen moves accordingly. When the user taps their index finger, the size of the blob changes and the camera recognizes the intended mouse click.

iPad Pressure Demonstration

This is a technical demonstration of pressure sensitivity on an Apple iPad using a Pogo Sketch. The video shows how pen pressure can be used to change the width of a line. Palm rejection capabilities are also demonstrated. For more information, visit tenonedesign.com/blog.

Please Note: The small drawing lag in the video is an issue with our demo application code, and isn't a limitation of the iPad or the pressure-sensitive library. Hope you'll forgive us for cobbling this together in a hurry!
